Did you know?
The founders of Atlético Madrid were three Basque students studying in Madrid that wanted to create a club modeled after their hometown club, Athletic Bilbao. Both clubs started out wearing a kit of white and blue stripes that they bought from England—they were Blackburn Rovers kits.
But around 1911, both teams switched colors to white and red stripes. The reason? The man they sent to England to buy the new kits, Juan Elorduy, couldn’t find enough Blackburn Rovers kits. So he bought Southampton kits instead.
